The Spirit of FIFA @TEDx - Exhibition

I'm in my studio for a while Sunday when I received this photo through facebook by Utpal Pande, one of the organizers of the Spirit of FIFA, poster contest. Today was the opening of the exhibition of posters in Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus in Delhi, India.

My work was dedicated to the legendary Makana Football Association..

Makana Football Association was a sporting body formed by political prisoners on Robben Island, South Africa who organised football leagues for fellow inmates.] Formed in 1966, the association ran a league until 1973, adhering strictly to the Laws of the Game, the FIFA rulebook being one of the few books in the prison library. Prior to this the game had been banned by the prison authorities, but starting in December 1964 prisoners took it turns to "...request to be allowed to play football" every Saturday. At one point the F.A. was running three leagues, with teams from nine clubs competing. The organisation crossed the political divides in the prison, between the ANC and the PAC, with over half of the inmates involved in the leagues. A small group of prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Ahmed Kathrada were, however, barred from participating in or even watching the matches organised.

The Makana F.A. was given honorary membership of FIFA in 2007, and in the same year a film was made telling the story of the F.A., entitled More Than Just A Game. Current President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, was a Makana F.A. referee.

I believe that these men gave a great dignity to soccer when taking it beyond and acceding to the freedom by means of the sport, of this old and modern game that is lost at night of the times of the humanity ...



Yo pase un rato al estudio este domingo y me llevé la sorpresa de recibir la foto de Utpal Pande, sobre la exhibición de carteles del evento: The Spirit of FIFA, muestra que se inauguró hoy en Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus en Delhi, India.

Mi trabajo participante fue dedicado a la legendaria Makana Football Association.

La Makana Football Association fue una asociación deportiva formada por los presos políticos de Robben Island, durante la Sudáfrica del Apartheid. Formada en 1966, la Makana FA realizó ligas de fútbol entre los reclusos hasta 1973, manteniendo un estricto apego a las reglas del juego ya que el reglamento de la FIFA era uno de los pocos libros permitidos en la prisión. En su mejor momento llegó a contar hasta con nueve equipos de reclusos. El reglamento de la FIFA era uno de los pocos libros permitidos en la biblioteca de prisión. Antes de esto el juego había sido prohibido por las autoridades de la prisión, pero comenzando en diciembre de 1964 los presos demandaron " … la petición de ser permitido jugar el fútbol" cada sábado.
