Hoy recibí la triste noticia del fallecimiento del ilustrador mexicano Gerardo Suzán Prone, quien dejó muchos libros para niños y jóvenes publicados en México y varios países. En mis inicios en la ilustración editorial hicimos un libro-juguete al alimón en 1995, para la Comisión de Derechos Humanos del Distrito Federal, también lo hicimos con el ahora reconocido Alejandro Magallanes. Recuerdo que lo hicimos en su estudio de la Portales, y estuvimos trabajando ahí en ese departamento-estudio.
Le perdí la pista después porque estuve involucrado en otros tipos de trabajos, en la docencia universitaria, en un Posgrado, en varios viajes, en la ilustración, en el cartel, la gráfica urbana y digital con Birula Gráfica, y mi posterior interés en la novela gráfica. Pero asistí a sus exposiciones en la Academia de San Carlos en 2015 y su exhibición en el Instituto Italiano de Cultura de 2016 en Coyoacán. Donde noté el frágil estado de su salud. Recuerdo que a veces hacia varios libros al mismo tiempo, aunque si tenía ayudantes que lo asistian en sus procesos editoriales.
Sin duda el mtro. Suzán fue importante para la fundación de la FILIJ y el catálogo de ilustradores del extinto CONACULTA. Sin duda pertenece a una generación de ilustradores que les tocó vivir la época dorada de la ilustración en México, nada que ver con esta época donde se ha ahogado al ecosistema editorial mexicano desde malas políticas públicas que no saben nada de la economía naranja. Los creadores ahora sobreviven con pocos encargos, aunque el panorama mundial tampoco ha sido fácil desde la postpandemia y una inflación causada por la guerra al otro lado del charco. Inclusive en Argentina por ejemplo, estuvo escaseando el papel para imprimir. Volviendo al tema anterior, los grandes maestros se han estado despidiendo.
Today I received the sad news of the death of the Mexican illustrator Gerardo Suzán Prone, who left many books for children and young people published in Mexico and several countries. Without a doubt the mtro. Suzán was important for the foundation of FILIJ and the catalog of illustrators of the extinct CONACULTA.
